CRPG Review Dungeon

Welcome to my collection of CRPG Reviews!

Here you will find a list of detailed reviews for Computer Role-Playing Games ranging from years 1980 through 2025. I will mostly focus on older games from the earlier years, but some newer ones may be worth talking about from time to time.

Full Review preamble here: Why I began this journey.

1980-1990

Pool of Radiance 1988 Rating: A-

The first official AD&D computer role-playing game and an absolute classic. One of the best tactical turn-based combat systems, a fun open-world to explore, and just a great straightforward adventure. Beware of the archaic rules of 1st edition however. The controls as well can get a bit of taking used to, but it's still a solid D&D adventure. *Author's note: this review is a bit lacking compared to the rest of my reviews. I plan on rewriting it in the future to bring it up to my current quality standards.*

Curse of the Azure Bonds 1989 Rating: B+

The second game in the Forgotten Realms Gold Box SSI series. Containing a new and more intriguing story, some quality of life improvements, and more variety in encounter design. At the cost however, to a rather limited and unimpressive open-world with many repeated same looking locations.

Quest for Glory I 1989 Rating: A-

A sucessful fusion of Adventure game and Role-Playing game genres leads to an iconic series among Sierra's list of games. Well written and memorable characters that can also be humorous without becoming a parody. As well as some great puzzles that have many different solutions depending on your character build. The combat system is a bit rough, but the game is a worthwhile and memorable experience.

Quest for Glory II 1990 Rating: A-

An excellent sequel to an already iconic original. Taking place in a new region with new characters, improved graphics and sound, and improved combat. The beginning of the game can be rough however prior to aquiring the in-game map, however it is well worth it as the rest of the game is an amazing experience.

Secret of the Silver Blades 1990 Rating: C

A decent entry in the Forgotten Realms Gold Box SSI series. There are some nice quality of life features like a bank to store items and mouse control in the menus, however the game has had some sacrifices that make this a much weaker game than the previous entries.

1991-2000

Betrayal at Krondor 1993 Rating: A-

An epic RPG based on the novels written by Raymond E. Feist. Fantastic story and characters, a huge open world full of colorful characters, towns, and side quests. While also having a unique progression system and satisfying combat. The only problem however, is moving around the environment can be tricky especially if your looking for something particular like an NPC or a chest.

Fallout 1997 Rating: A

A fantastic CRPG that helped revitalize the genre. A unique progression system that inspired many RPG systems still to this day. Fallout contains a great story with quality art direction, music, and atmosphere. It cuts the fat and padding that most RPGs consist of and manages to deliver a concise and quality experience that stands tall with the best of the genre.

Baldur's Gate 1998 Rating: A

One of the finest and most influential RPGs ever made. Baldur's Gate takes you across the Sword Coast with beautifully pre-rendered 3d environments, a fun and innovative real-time with pause combat system, and an excelent story with a mystery that unfolds throughout the game. The open world does consist of a lot of walking through forests until you come across something interesting which can be a bit of a drag and the real-time with pause system may not be everyone's favorite, but the pros greatly outweigh the cons in my opinion.
