GrillysRPGs

Sept 3, 2025

I never used to be super into RPGs prior to a few years ago. For a long time the only RPGs I played were Skyrim, Oblivion, Diablo, Titan's Quest, Dungeon Siege, and some other similar games. One day I was tired of my annual Skyrim playthrough and wanted a new RPG to sink time into and get immersed in, like the first time I played Skyrim. Eventually as I was browsing games on Steam, I came across a game called Planescape Torment. What immediately caught my attention was the visuals. I am no stranger to old games and always appreciated old pre-rendered 3D graphics. When I first tried Planescape, I bounced off of it after a couple of hours. I wasn't quite in the right mindset for that kind of game yet. A few months later checked out the other Infinity Engine games and decided to try Baldur's Gate. It was a bit of a learning curve at first, figuring out 2nd ed AD&D rules and how the mechanics worked, but once I understood it, I was hooked.

When I finished the game I was craving more similar style RPGs. I played Kotor, Fallout, Baldur's Gate 2, and eventually revisited Planescape and beat it. It was around this time that I started accumulating all kinds of CRPGs that interested me and making a spreadsheet of what I wanted to play next. I started writing reviews too and putting them on Steam. Steam's review character limit started to become a problem however, as I tried to go very in-depth in my reviews. So I got the idea that I could start a blog to write my reviews there. Eventually though, I got into html and website building, which lead me to making this website. So I decided to create this RPG review page and put my reviews up here.

With my reviews I want to cover various eras of CRPGs; from the 1980s to the 2010s. I don't plan on playing and reviewing every CRPG. If you want a deep assortment of CRPG reviews that cover everything in great detail, then I recommend you check out CRPG Addict. My reviews will just be on the games that interest me the most and seem worth it to me to play and review. I also want to mostly focus on older games, specifically from 1980-2000s. There are a lot of great games from this time that don't get enough recognition. Some are very obscure and some are must plays that are important to not just the genre, but gaming as a whole.
